Compost Pile Full of Heat!

Steam coming off the compost pile on a 25 degree day.

This past Monday I took some video of the compost pile while I was adding some shredded papers and kitchen scraps. WIth all the bedding and manure Tess the horse generates we have a good size compost pile. The pile you see at the end of the video is only about 1/2 to 1/3 the size it was this fall before I took the aged stuff and added it to the garden.

The compost pile will get as long as 25 feet with a 6 to 8 foot width and 3 to 4 foot height. This pile is number four at Clean Slate Farm, the others having already been added to the garden beds. The garden beds, we have two of them, are 25 feet x 30 feet and bed one, the original bed, is 12 feet x 25 feet. I guess I never realized it but we have just over 1,000 square feet of garden space.
